Stroke is a sudden loss of consciousness followed by paralysis. It’s a common manifestation of arterial degeneration with fatty deposits and atheroma formation occurring in arteries of the brain of the elderly. A stroke is caused by either clotting of blood on top of the atheroma or rupture of an artery of the brain. Both events destroy the brain tissue. Symptoms depend on the area of the brain affected. If the damaged hemisphere is the dominant one, speech may also be affected.
