The Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) is a unidirectional device and like diode which allows the flow of current in only one direction. Basically SCR is a four layer device where p and n regions are alternately changed. The outer p layer is called anode which is heavily doped. It is very important that anode must be positive with respect to cathode to forward bias the SCR. But this is not sufficient criterion to turn ON the SCR. A current is to be passed through the gate terminal. Therefore SCR is a current operated device. There are five basic methods of turning ON SCR.
