Thermostat, when the engine is cold; the thermostat closes to prevent coolant circulation to the radiator. Thus thermostat keeps all heat in the engine so that engine gets warm up quickly. As the engine warms up, then the thermostat opens to allow the coolant flow through the radiator. This is a heat exchanger with two sets of passage. One set of passage for coolant and other for the outside air. In radiator, the coolant loses heat to the passing air. Then the coolant flows back through the water jackets to pick up the heat again. Thus the circulation of the coolant continues between the water jackets and the radiator.
