The commonest cause of liver damage, cirrhosis and liver failure is chronic heavy consumption of alcohol. Some cases are due to viral hepatitis almost 10 per cent cases of Hepatitis B infection which is contracted by sexual intercourse or infected by blood transfusion, proceed to cirrhosis of liver. Both alcohol and permissive sex are preventable causes of this debilitating and ultimately fatal illness. Liver is responsible for metabolism of food and drugs including alcohol. Alcohol interferes with the metabolism of both carbohydrates and fats.
