It is also known as erythrocytes. They are round disks with a diameter of about 8micrometer. Cell nucleus is absent in RBC. One cubic millimeter of blood contains about 4.5 to 5.5 million RBC’s. The rate of RBC generation is 9000 per day and its life time is 120 days. RBC is generated at the bone marrow. It has an iron-containing protein pigment called hemoglobin. It binds the oxygen molecule to the hemoglobin and transports oxygen through the blood. The oxygen rich arterial blood is bright red in color and the oxygen-depleted venous blood is dark red in color
