Friction generates heat and some parts of the energy applied is lost. The lubricants are to reduce this friction and save mechanical systems. The lubricating oil performs the following functions such as it reduces friction between the moving parts, it functions like a cooling medium, it reduces some noise between the striking surfaces, it seals a joint to make it gas leak proof. The following additives are used to improve the quality of a lubricant: Oxidation and corrosion Inhibitors, Detergent Additives, anti foam additives, pour point depressants, viscosity index improvers, Oiliness and film strength Agents. There are three types of the lubrication system in engines: petrol lubrication system , wet sump lubrication system, Dry sump lubrication system.
