Angina and heart attack together are known by the generic name of ischaemic heart disease. It may cause mild or unalarming symptoms, so that the patient may remain unmindful of their existence, but is a serious disease and all symptoms, howsoever mild, need to be taken seriously, so that timely action can be taken. Angina is a heart pain of short duration lasting not more than twenty minutes, usually much less. The angina causes severe pain which can be relieved by stopping the exertion and by placing nitroglycerine or sorbitrate under the tongue. The presence of angina indicates the existence of ischaemic heart disease and therefore increases the risk of heart attack. Proper control of diabetes or hypertension present is also a treatment of angina.
