Blood is the carrier of the essential nutrients, water and oxygen to tissues. If the heart stops pumping, the whole body would be deprived of blood supply, resulting in death in a few minutes due to interruption of oxygen supply. If an artery supplying blood to a particular organ becomes obstructed, and the blood cannot pass through it, the organ dies. One would, therefore, appreciate why the uninterrupted beating of the heart and the unhampered flow of blood in the arteries are crucial to life. Important diseases affecting the blood vessels and heart are hypertension and ischaemic heart diseases, i.e. angina and heart attacks. Unfortunately, they are common, and are becoming more common with certain changes in our life style.
