The notched disc is attached to the top end of the steering shaft. With the automatic transmission in park position, the driver turns the key to lock. The spring loaded plunger moves up into a notch in the disk, locking the steering wheel and also locks the transmission in the park. If the key will not move to lock, and then turn the steering wheel until the plunger and a notch align. Then the spring will force the plunger up and the key will turn to lock. Turning the key from lock to off pulls the plunger out of notch in the disk. This unlocks the steering wheel and the transmission. Thus the ignition switch works and it is used for multi-purpose jobs.
