A catalytic converter may have two different catalysts. One catalyst treats the hydro-carbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO). Other catalyst treats nitrous oxide (NOx). The first catalyst for HC and CO encourages HC to unite with oxygen to become H2O that is water and CO2 that is carbon-di-oxide. This type of converter is an oxidizing converter because it oxidizes the HC and CO. The second catalyst for NOx acts differently, it splits the oxygen from the nitrogen. Then NOx becomes harmless. This type of converter is called reducing converter. Inside catalytic converter, exhaust gases pass over a large surface area coated with catalyst. As the vehicle starts and runs, the exhaust gases enter the catalytic converter through the exhaust pipe and the reaction occurs, then harmless gases out from the catalytic converter reaches muffler and to the environment.
