Graphite and diamonds are the two common form of pure carbon. Among which diamonds are considered to be the hardest naturally occurring substance known and it is a valuable gemstone as well. Diamonds are formed deep in the earth by tremendous pressures and temperatures over long period of time. In the crystal structure of diamond, each carbon atom is linked to four other, equidistant, carbon atoms. Though graphite is also a purest form of carbon its properties are very different when compared to that of diamonds. Diamonds vary from colorless to black and may be transparent sometimes, translucent, or opaque. Colorless or pale blue stones are most valued, but most gem diamonds are tinged with yellow. Because of their extreme hardness, diamonds have important industrial applications. In the symbolism of gemstones, the diamond represents steadfast love. It is mined in huge quantities in many countries in Africa. And the Argyle mine in Kimberley in Australia is the largest mine in the world.Although the government has established the Diamond mines smuggling of diamonds directly from the mines are being worked out at times, to many countries in the world. People have a craze for diamond ornaments which they find it fancy enough to show others that they belong to royal blood.
