Mutation is nothing but the alteration in the genetic material of a cell that is transmitted to the cell’s offspring. These mutations may be spontaneous or it can also be induced by other outside factors. These mutations take place in the genes, when one base is substituted for another in the sequence of bases that determines the genetic code, or when one or more base is inserted or deleted from a gene. Many mutations are harmless, often masked by the presence of dominant normal gene. Whereas some may have serious consequences like sickle cell anemia. Only mutations that occur in the sex cells can be transmitted to the individual’s offspring and alterations caused by these mutations are usually harmful. In the rare instances in which a mutation produces a beneficial change, the percentage of organisms with these genes will tend to increase until the mutated gene becomes the norm in the population. And so, beneficial mutations serve as the raw material for evolution. More over there are many movies that reveal the concept of mutation in human beings. The mutation can cause any type of unique behavior or appearance in the human. They may even tend to lose the human nature in them. And there are many real examples that can be seen among animals and birds.
