I have always been asked as to how to remove a heat sink set up that covers the processor in the p4 range of processors. The new ones that come today are the core2duo processor and they have a totally different set up and don’t need much effort to remove. The p4 processors use a different die when compared to the new processors and these old ones generate a lot of heat and need to be suitably cooled to ensure maximum performance and life of the processor chip. To make sure that these chips remain cool Intel used a set up that contains a aluminium heat sink and a fan attached together using a retention device that holds the two in place. Now the heat sink goes right on top of the processor and has direct contact to it. It allows the heat to move away from the chip. The fan on top then makes sure that this heat from the heat sink is carried away from the sink by acting like an exhaust fan. To dismantle this you need patients and the right amount of force. Any major force will result in physical damage to the chip. Fist of all remove the 2 white strips on top. They move to the other side. Then use a flat screw driver to remove the plastic clip that holds the fans mould to the retention piece. After this the procedure is simple. To fit it back you need to nake sure that everything has been inserted properly.
