A hard disk is a physical device that you use to store all your data, most people really don’t know how a hard disk stores the data. In this post I shall explain the basic functioning of hard disk and a common problem that people are facing with these devices.

A hard disk has a reader and writer head that is used to write all the data onto the rotating platter. The platter is just like a DVD but is capable of storing loads of data. This effectively makes it a high storage capacity DVD. The head has a pin that writes to each sector on the hard disk. A sector is just a sub division in the hard disk that denotes one area of the platter. Each sector has a specific size; the size denotes the amount of data that you can write into each sector. Suppose you have a 4 GB disk, and each sector represents 4mb or 4096 bytes then the hard disk will have almost 1000 sectors.

Now suppose a sector gets corrupted then all the data on that sector cannot be used. Thankfully there are tools that can repair this physically damaged sector and block it. this means that your disk will work properly, but you wont be able to use that part of the disk again.
