Scientists at the Children's institute of Cancer, Australia claim that they have discovered how to effectively treat a form of deadly cancer-neuroblastoma by re-engineering a 40 year old drug already available in the market. They claim that research conducted on lab rats which were genetically programmed to have the cancer which eventually engulfs the body with tumors have shown subsequent and positive change in the growth rate of the tumors after administering the drug known as DFMO which delayed the occurrence of new tumors. DFMO was combined along with conventional anti -cancer drug such as cisplatin that was used to treat the mice. Progressively they were able to see remarkable changes in the mice and the Director of the research foundation was quoted as saying -"The mice were cured. That’s something you don’t see in aggressive cases of neuroblastoma". Roughly it is estimated that more that 75% of children diagnosed with various forms of cancer survive, only 50 % of those who come down with neuroblastoma don’t always do so. The research has proved to be promising and has brought new hope among those families affected by members suffering from this deadly disease.
