New systems that can help you look around? Sounds weird doesn’t it, yes it does, and this is a new system that may be able to help the blind people navigate in today’s crazy world. The system may sound a bit crazy but it seems to work quite well, or so say the developers. The system is based on a small digital camera that is attached to the end of any one finger and used to look around. The finger can be moved to get a better view of the surroundings, this is then relayed to a laptop computer which maps the terrain and identifies all the obstacles in the path and classifies it if possible. This means that you can now “see” doors and other objects with this camera. But how will it help the blind? There is no point in having a system that generates a visual image. But this is where the system shines. The terrain that is mapped is fed into a speech generator which can generate the directions based on the map. In essences it is a GPS device that speaks well, the system has proved to be quite god in most of the tests that were conducted. It is so powerful that it is possible to identify different light switches from a distance. This is the kind of system that the blind need. Work is on to reduce the size of this device and make it portable.
