Have you ever seen the ocean and the waves? You may wonder how these waves are made and you may also wonder why you never see any waves in ponds and lakes. The waves in the sea are generated due to the sun and the moon. This may sound absurd as one may think about how this is possible. The explanation is that the moon and sun have their own gravity which attracts objects towards it. The moon’s gravity is not as strong as the sun’s gravity. The gravity of these bodies causes them to try to attract the oceans towards themselves. This causes an uneasy motion in the water body and the result is the generation of waves. The moon is capable of causing tides even though its gravitational pull is low because of its close proximity to the earth. When both the sun and the moon are on the same side the gravitational pull causes high tides and the level of the water rises. This is due to the combined gravitational pull of the sun and the moon. During low tides the sun and moon are on either side of the earth and hence their power gets neutralized by the other. Only ocean bodies are large enough to feel the pull and not the smaller water bodies like lakes.
