There is something about the humble ant population that is so profound, that new research has been performed using these creatures as models. I’m once again posting an article that has a lot of science in it and therefore has the ability to change the way we perceive things around us. Most of us, at some point in our life might have wondered as to how these ants move from their lodging to the site of food in precise lines, never moving away from the established route. This is typically observed in the common ant population that have divided their populations into levels based on the type of work performed.
Research has proved that when these ants move initial in the search of food they produce certain compounds called pheromones that help them leave a trail. This is one way in which an ant can retrace its steps back to the colony. It is also a method used by ants in order to scout for food and avoid repetitive movements to the same place. When scientists used a synthetic alternative and used that to form a new path, it was observed that these ants began moving on this new path irrespective of the presence or the absence of a desired object at the end of it. This establishes the fact that, there are compounds secreted by the ants which help them flag certain regions to inform the rest of the colony.
