One would wonder what this means, they would probably think of it as a physical bridge somewhere in the north. But no, the north bridge is the name of a component that is used in a computer’s motherboard. The function of this is to create a bridge between the various critical components of the computer. The north bridge is a chip that lies in the upper part of the computer’s motherboard. It is also very critical for the functioning of the computer. Most people know that data transfers are done by using the data bus which is situated through out the computer. Any data from any device moves through this bus to reach the desired locations. But what people don’t know is that all the devices that use the data bus need to be controlled. Failure to control these will result in all devices dumping their data onto the bus and causing an overflow thereby bringing down the computer. The north bridge handles this by keeping a tab on the devices such as the processor, hard disk, ram and some of the input devices. What it does is it controls the devices and gives permission for each device only when it’s needed and only when the bus is not full. This is the most important chip in the computer as it keeps it stable.
