There are a variety of wells and while explaining about them it becomes pertinent to explore the scenarios where each type is utilized. My visits to many ancestral homes, traditional homes in the villages and modern dwellings have provided me with an opportunity to observe and analyze the applications of the art of well building. Firstly let me classify these architectural structures into two types the widely used open wells and the more recent bore wells.
In the villages, one seldom comes across a bore well. This is because the advantages of an open well greatly overshadow those of the closed bore wells. The open well is easily dug with minimum manual labor that is available in abundance for a very low cost. This well helps in the collection of rain water which percolates through the soil and gets collected in the huge well. In contrast, the closed bore well which can go up to a depth of many hundred feet is preferred in the cities as it requires a much lesser space. These have therefore gained much favor among the city dwellers. I have also found a major difference in the nature of water in the city as opposed to that of the village. The city water is usually brackish and sometimes coloured whereas the water found in the villages is pristine.
