This is something I notice by chance and I’m not sure if anyone else has given it a thought. Like always I expect people to comment on what I write in the hope that I might improve on what I have been posting to provide more interesting information. Anyway, the point of this post is to explain to the common man as to why paper folds upwards when it burns. I’m sure many of you have tried burning paper in your childhood or during those occasional campfires or just for fun. One thing that always happens when paper burns is that the paper begins to curl upwards, many reasons have been given to explain this queer happening , I for one believe in the most scientific of all explanations.
Paper is actually is a fine network of inter connected fibers. The fibers are so connected that some times even water cannot seep through it. This is because, when paper is made, wood is mashed to a pulp and this is spread out to form fine layers. This sis almost the same protocol practiced by the early Chinese, the only alterations being the adoption of machines and better constituents. Let me stop digressing from the topic at hand. So why does paper have to curl upwards all the time when it is set on fire? The most scientific fact is that, when the paper begins burning the moisture on the upper surface evaporates faster than the lower surface. This is because the flame is brighter at the upper surface due a larger availability of air. Therefore, as the moisture evaporates it creates a stress that tends to curl the paper upwards due to a difference in the concentration in the water content between layers.
