There has been much talk about global warming and the means of countering it. However nothing much has gone beyond talk. There are a number of global talks taking place, where the heads of many states take a vow to act as quickly as possible to prevent further pollution. In spite of such steps, we the common citizens do not observe any visible change. I believe it is time we introspect and discover for ourselves, where we as human beings are contributing to this phenomenon.

It wouldn’t come as a shock to those sincerely concerned about the environment that commercial aircrafts produce the same amount of carbon in the first five minutes of flight that hundreds of acres of trees can absorb in an entire day. If this is the case of aircrafts we can only imagine the amount of pollutants released by the billions of fuel guzzling vehicles plying on the roads. Firstly, enormous amounts of resources and energy are consumed in the process of manufacture of these vehicles and secondly these vehicles produce high levels of pollutants such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. These pollutants disperse in the air and cause lung irritation and other problems. They also affect the environment by absorbing the solar heat and increasing the temperature of the planet.
