The Indian Space Research Organisation more commonly called ISRO has reported the development and the launch of Bhuvan, a mapping program that can potentially challenge Google Earth’s top position. Bhuvan in Sanskrit refers to the earth and what this program is expected to deliver is images with a much higher resolution than G.Earth. The recent satellites launched by ISRO will be used to compile the humongous amount of data required to map the entire globe and this will be available from the main ISRO network. Unlike Google, ISRO has promised to display images with a height of 10 meters which is a huge improvement of 100 m offered by Google. Moreover, ISRO has reported that it would update the images every year, another move that can threaten Google which updates its maps every four years.

It is speculated that in spite of a technologically superior imaging program, Bhuvan will take a long period of time to match up with the ease offered by G.Earth. This is because unless Bhuvan offers the same kind of functionality such as the participation of the viewers and incorporates their contributions, it will remain just another program that displays pictures. Another factor that needs to be addressed is privacy, unless such detailed images are regulated by laws it will lead to unnecessary security lapses.
